Thank you for reading Jasini’s Thoughts and Ideas
Last night I was driving home after dropping my son off, when the thunderstorm they’d been predicting for at least the last week finally hit. With a vengeance.
I was about halfway home when the winds hit. Also lightning, but that didn’t bother me nearly as much as the buffeting my car was getting from the winds. And the debris flying through the air. I think most of it was cardboard-like material, but I still didn’t want it hitting my car.
The first thing I noticed was that the visibility was way down. This was before the rain started, so I was a bit confused. It must have been blowing hard enough to raise the dust. Then I was having difficulty keeping the car under control. Not really, but I slowed down, and everyone else slowed down as well, especially the big trucks. I imagine if a little car like me was having trouble being blown to the side, they probably had it far worse.
Then there was lightning in the sky all around. I didn’t hear any thunder. I don’t know if the wind noise was drowning it out, or too far away, or just that I was paying more attention to the road than anything I could hear.
I typically move from the middle lane of the highway to the right before crossing the bridge over the Missouri, since I take the exit immediately afterwards. Last night I stayed in the middle lane, since there is only about a 2, maybe 3, foot shoulder on the bridge, and I wanted to have room to maneuver should I get hit by another gust. But fortunately about the time I got to the bridge over the Missouri, the wind died down, and the driving rain started. Normally I hate driving at night in the driving rain. Last night I welcomed it.
Oddly enough, a lot of weather changes right at the river. Things you wouldn’t expect to change. Like having a lot of fog south of the river, but none north of it, or vice versa.
As I got home, I was planning on opening the garage door and run in that way, rather than run up the outside stairs like I normally do. But when I got there, my husband had the garage door open, and was standing there watching for me. He gave me a big hug, and told me he was glad I was home safe, he’d been worried about me.
I’m glad the power didn’t go out last night, though it did waver a bit.
