We came in to the house to do some more cleaning and packing, and discovered this on the pantry floor. Pasta and beans and rice spread all about, as well as the unopened bottles and cans havingbeen knocked about. This looked far more like a critter than human destruction. We figured it had to be a racoon. The stuff on the floor was way too big for it to have been mice that got into it. Presumably some of the dried pasta, beans, and rice was eaten. Or at least knawed on.
And coons have hands, so they can make a lot of mess. All the more annoying since we had already swept that floor after the fire. Not that it was clean yet.
We used the last bit of our Red Cross money to buy plastic bins with lockable lids to put the remainder of our get-intoable food in. We figured that the sealed cans and bottles wouldn’t cause enough of a temptation for the coons to bother.
And then, of course, my husband bought a live trap, baited it with tuna, and waited.
The next evening there was a coon in the trap. My husband released it a few miles away. Hopefully it won’t find it’s way back anytime soon.

Ugh, insult to injury indeed. Please do tell us once you get re-established somewhere so "things" can be sent. At this point it's still too soon....clearly the critters and vermin are winning but don't give up, Betsy! This too shall pass! Promise!
