Thank you for reading Jasini’s Thoughts and Ideas
Well, it seems like I have a productive day, then collapse the next day. Happens far too often, it seems. Monday I managed to get several sections of Tolly & Glorina edited, as well as spending the morning going to court (only to find it closed).
Tuesday, however, I was either tired/sleepy, or else I had a headache. Possibly both. You’d be surprised how much the symptoms of both overlap. So, I spent most of the day resting it bed. Mostly reading/playing games. Sometimes eating. Sometimes sleeping.
I think it may have been the thunderstorm rolling in, but who knows?
Following up on my earlier note:
The churches I’ve been attending lately don’t use hymnals. We have the words up on the screen. No music, though. No bulletins, either, for what difference that makes. It mostly means that I don’t remember any announcements unless I think to write them down. Which seldom happens, as I seldom remember to take any writing materials in.
I don’t remember which song it was that particularly hit me and made me write that note later that afternoon, but I remember it was one of the old hymns that had a nice alto line. One that was neither singing the same note over and over, nor singing a third below the melody (though those can be fun).
Unfortunately, I could only remember about half of the line. And since we don’t have hymnals, which means we don’t have the music in front of us, I couldn’t look at it and make an educated guess. (I can read music, but not fluently.)
These are things I particularly miss about hymns (in no particular order):
Having all the words in front of me, especially all the verses.
Being able to sing all the verses (I love that.) Even though I know that even in the older books, they didn’t necessarily have all the verses.
Having the music in front of me, so I can pick out the alto line (my husband will frequently pick out the alto, tenor, and bass line in separate verses).
Making it more difficult to have the words changed on the pastor’s whim. (“Excuse me, sir, but do you realize that in trying not to offend anyone you have just eliminated two and a half members of the Trinity?”)
As far as changing the words, if I have them memorized, I will sing the words I know. Change them at your own peril.
I’m sure there are other reasons, and things like having something to read during the sermon probably don’t count.
I’m writing this on Wednesday. I was thinking of posting it tomorrow (which is Thursday), but then I remembered that it’s the Fourth. Independence Day. So I’ll schedule this for Friday.
If I feel inspired to write anything patriotic tomorrow, I’ll do so.

Now, at our church we use a hymnal... and a Psalter. That last means when you sing from it you are not only singing God's Word, you are memorising it!
