Several people have asked about the cause of the fire. It seems that it was indeed arson. Several of our neighbors have footage of a tall blonde woman stealing a ladder from a house a couple houses above us, taking it around back, and then running away just as the first wisps of white smoke are visible. We think that the woman was after the person who we allowed to keep two dogs and a bunch of stuff under the back deck. But she may have been aided and abetted by someone who thought he had something against us. There have been a few things that happened that shot him way up our suspect list.
We’ve seen one of these videos. The back of the house is only partially visible, so we can’t see what the woman was doing. But we did see her running away. We were watching on a phone, so her facial features were hard to make out, but my husband is familiar with the dog that was following her. It belongs to our chief suspect.
After that, we can see the smoke turn black, and hear loud crackling coming from the back of the house, as the flames start being visible.
It spread insanely fast. If our friend hadn’t been at that end of the house, and heard the crackling, it’s entirely possible that there would have been three lives lost, and the whole house burnt down. But he must have closed the French doors that separated the main section from the additions, since the flames did not get into the main section of the house, and everyone got out all right. Much can be saved from the main section.
If things had gone just a little bit different, we would not known anything was wrong, and would have enjoyed our meal at park, watched a show, and come home happy, only to discover firetrucks in the street, our house gone, and our son, and friends dead.
I thank God that the worst did not happen.
